freesat launches today

Today sees the launch of freesat – a joint venture
by the BBC and ITV. freesat clearly has the word ‘free’ in it so what does it
all mean and will we all be getting free TVs? Sadly not. However, if you
already have an HD-ready TV (that’s high definition for all those people who’ve
been living under a rock for the past few months), you can get over 80 different
television channels and a mega bundle of radio channels, without having to pay a
monthly subscription charge…So if you don’t count the £150ish set-top box that
you need to get started and an extra £80 for a satellite dish and installation,
it’s a cheaper way to get your hands on a load of exciting content. If you’re one of
the fortunate who already have a satellite dish, you could get out
of that
extra £80. Even if you don’t have an HD-ready TV, you can still benefit from
freesat, you just won’t get any of the HD programmes…although with this summer
packed full of exciting sporting events, you’d be silly not to want to watch it
all through an HD TV.
HD TV will improve your viewing experience so much
that the people at freesat claim you can “watch the
BBC’s Planet Earth in HD TV
and you’ll feel like you can nuzzle up to a polar bear” – well if that doesn’t
make you want to rush out and buy an HD TV, I don’t know what will. If that did
actually tempt you, make sure you read all the HD TV reviews on Reevoo before
you part with a large chunk of your hard-earned cash.
freesat also boast that the service has “a huge
choice of entertainment including movies, music, sport, lifestyle, children’s,
shopping, news and more. And we’ve organised them into easy-to-use categories
with our freesat electronic programme guide - so you can find what you want at
the touch of a button”. So there you go. Will you be freesatting soon?
Find out more about freesat here. Those of you in the market for a new TV but who haven’t decided what type you fancy, can have a read of all the TV reviews here.

There’s a bit more information from the launch on http://www.ukfree.tv/fullstory.php?storyid=1107051369.
One thing that caught my attention was the fact that the boxes have an ethernet port to connect to the internet, and the BBC are claiming that the iPlayer catch-up service will be available on FreeSat very soon.
